License Information

Can I get a Work Permit to Drive?

Yes, usually you can. Here are the steps to get your work permit in Minnesota (if you are eligible)

  • 1. Go to your local Driver's License Testing Bureau
  • 2. Pay your driver's license reinstatement fee of $680.
  • 3. Take your test. This driver’s test is the “written” portion on the computer.
  • 4. Request a "limited license" aka a work permit.
  • 5. The testing bureau has you call the Department of Public Safety to determine when and where you can drive.
  • 6. Wait the required waiting period.

What if I REALLY need my license?

The fact you really need your license is not factored into at all by either the Judge or the Department of Public Safety, Motor Vehicle Division.

Yes, I understand that, but I REALLY, REALLY need my license to work.

Unfortunately, there is no hardship exception to get your driver’s license back in Minnesota. The laws seem to be written for the people who live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and have good public transportation systems. If you live in St. James, Mankato, St. Peter, Fairmont or Jackson the fact that there is not the same bus, light-rail, or even taxis, simply isn’t factored into you getting your a work permit or your drivers license back.

Many people fail to think outside the box when they lose their driver’s license, here are some suggestions:

  • Ask friends, relatives, neighbors to car pool
  • Hire a young nephew/niece to drive you for a few weeks.
  • Hire a college student to drive you.
  • Consider taking a taxi to work.
You need to ask yourself, is your current job worth spending the amount of money a driver will charge? Of course another option may be to hire a skilled DWI attorney who may be able to get you your driver’s license back immediately, or temporarily get your license back. On many occasions, Rosengren Kohlmeyer has gotten their clients’ licenses back in weeks and sometimes days.
